THE THING THAT CHOSE YOU.....

Substance abuse disorder, or commonly known as S.U.D, is a phrase that no one thinks they will companion themselves with in the future. However, some have partnered themselves with a substance that has affected not only the individual, but also the individual's family and to some extent their community. 

         Mariadhas Jesuraj did a research study were he looked at how Substance Use Disorder affected the individuals and the general population around them. Many people believe that the only thing there is to taking drug or consuming a large amount of alcohol is the pleasure portion to it. Many know and believe that drugs can be a quick way to escaping the reality of life. It acts as a numbing agent for the person to get away just long enough so that they can "finally" feel pleasure. However, Jesuraj found out that there are hidden secrets that lied behind the use of drugs. To those that have family, they risk destroying the relationship with their family. The demand to continually use drug on oneself is so great that at times a user might actually choose the drug over the family member/ loved one. Next you can have a lot of the financial resources depleted do to constant purchase of the drug. Many of the drugs today are not cheap in price so a user might have to use the money they had for other necessary things to cover the cost of the drug. Next, a user might risk his/her health in the process. Sadly, if one were to use the money one had before to purchase drug, when the time arises for a hospital visit from possible overdose where will the money then come from? It almost as if using drugs is a set up for failure.

         Jesuraj looked at how being in a family with someone who had a drug problem affected those in the household emotionally. A lot of their findings were done within an Americanized setting. This was seen to be a limitation in the research. Just because one family member has a drug problem might not equal to others in the family having emotion problems.
