Will Your Family 'Make of Break' You?

The reasons a person begins abusing a substance are endless. In this article written by Jesuraj, he stresses the idea of close knit family relationships bring the most healing to someone struggling with substance abuse. It is sad that many instances it is a persons very family that leads them to abusing a lethal substance. Families are the most influential unit to the individual. The persons family could ultimately 'make or break' them. Family plays a huge roll in the use of drugs. A young man that was interviewed for this article stated that after his parents separated he turned to drugs because he did not know what else to do. This 18 year-old believes his parents are ultimately responsible for his additive habits. It has to be pointed out that inadequate parenting could be a factor, especially uneducated parents. Some parents are unaware of the need children have for quality time and attention. When children are not given proper attention and monitored doors open for young children to enter into drugs. Jesuraj claims families will respond in one of nine ways.

  • Denial
  • Preoccupation
  • Problem Finding
  • Bargaining
  • Blaming
  • Controlling
  • Disorganized
  • Aggression
  • Change in Sexual Relationships
All of these responses are not ones to help a family member who is struggling with substance abuse. In order to prevent situations are serious as a child struggling with abuse, parents can take measures to help their children. They can a lot time for their children. They need a parents time, not just their money. They can believe in their child. They need to feel secure in their parents love. Parents can also get involved. Get to know the friends surrounding your children. Learn how to communicate with them, listen to them, and let them be free to express their thoughts and feelings.
