Researchers Mark Anderson and Daniel Rees came
together to examine a social epidemic that was making its way to becoming a
social norm in the United States. This social epidemic was Marijuana. The
researchers saw how marijuana became a legal drug in Colorado and wanted to see
what were the pros and cons of that happening.
Last year voter took it upon themselves to legalize
the recreational use marijuana. The terms were that anyone that was above the
years of 21 might purchase marijuana at retail stores. Researchers have
hypothesized that with this happening there will be drastic changes to the
community there in Colorado. The believe that there will be more heavy drinking
which will then result as carnage on the highway, and a massive use of
marijuana with minors.
The researchers did a longitudinal study watch how
the price of marijuana had change over time while it wasn't legalized versus
the time it was legalized. The conclusion for that was that once marijuana was
legalized the cost dramatically decreased. This suggested that the supply
response to the legalizing medical marijuana is greater than the demand
response.
Even though Colorado and Washington have both
legalized the production ad commercial use of marijuana it has been covered by
federal law. The laws prohibit the manufacturing of large-scale fields with
tractors and untrained workers. However,
most manufacturing can be done with small facilities.
There is an increasingly risky question that is
about to be answered in the future. The question is, “How will effect the
teenager?” Reports were taken from rehabilitation center all about the states
of Colorado, Washington, etc. The all claim that those teenage abusers who were
treated all said that they obtained their marijuana from a person who needed it
for medical use. If this is how the teenagers of these states are getting it their
marijuana imagine what it would be like if the local “pot shops” are in place.
Its time we do not allow this epidemic to control our lives and increase into
more problems for us as human beings.
