In the Journal Article “Smokers Versus
Snorters: Do Treatment Outcomes Differ According to Route of Cocaine
Administration?” by Brian D. Kiluk, Theresa A. Babuscio, Charla Nich, and
Kathleen M. Carroll, researchers studied to find
out if smoking cocaine or snorting cocaine had different treatments.There are
many different ways to administrate cocaine, smoking and snorting seem to be
the most popular among the United States. Researchers found that smoking crack
gives users more of a high rather than those who snort. Researchers also found
that smoking is more of a instant high of more maximal concentration rather
than snorting. Snorting has fewer consequences than smoking cocaine. Studies
have found that smoking crack cocaine brings upon not only greater consequences
but abuse and dependence as well. Injection of cocaine and the smoking of crack
are the two ways of administration that result in extreme consequences.


Some implications found in this research are
that the follow-ups are difficult after all the treatment. Especially when the
study consists of keeping up with a treatment for a long period of time. Many
different factors can be in someone’s life, which can effect how someone’s
outcome is at the end of the day. Treatment did not change with administration of
drugs. Results found that snorting cocaine has better results after being in
treatment. However, those who snorted cocaine had to be in treatment longer.
Better results should have been expected.
Some limitations found in the research are that
the participants were very limited. They had to find people who wanted
treatment from using cocaine. A huge limitation is that there was low validity
because researchers did not take into understanding of the amount of years a
user has been using. There were disproportionate sample sizes in aspects of
administration. As well, as questioning of whether participants used the same
form of cocaine or not.
